SpoofCard Review: A Comprehensive Look At SpoofCard

September 16th, 2007

The SpoofCard site states “SpoofCard allows me to make my calls truly private. I can display any number on the Caller ID, record my calls and change my voice. Whether for business or fun, it is inexpensive and easy to use!” We’re here to take a look at SpoofCard.com and let everyone know what we think after a few months of use. Let’s start off by taking a look at the the sign up/purchase process.

Signing up for SpoofCard is done by visiting SpoofCard.com and clicking on the “Purchase Minutes” link. SpoofCard’s buy page is very straight forward – select your purchase amount, either $10, $20, $40, or $80 worth of call time, enter your credit card information and your email address and your done. Your account is created instantly and your PIN number and toll free access number are delivered to the email address you entered on buy page. We logged in to our email account and found the email with all this information was already there waiting for us.

When we called SpoofCard’s toll free access number and entered our PIN number for the first time, we were surprised at how advanced, yet straightforward, the menu was. To place a call with SpoofCard press 1, to listen to your recorded calls press 2, to purchase more minutes for your PIN 3, and to reach live customer support, between 9am and 5pm EST, press 0. After pressing 1 to place a call, you begin your navigation through the SpoofCard phone menu. The first step is to enter the 10 digit phone number you wish to call followed the by # key. The second step is to enter the 10 digit number you want to show up on the caller id followed by the # key. These are probably the two most important steps! The third step is the voice changer where you can decide if you want to change your voice to a man or a woman, use your normal voice, or test out the voice changer and then listen to your samples. The last step is the call recorder, where you press 1 to record your call or 2 to skip recording. At this point your call is instantly put through! While the menu may seem like a lot of steps to go through, we found that everything can be completed quickly, especially the more you use the service and become familiar with the menus.

In our tests, we found that the voice changer is fun, but not that realistic, as some people may expect. The trick with the voice changer is to change the tone or pitch of your voice when speaking into the phone and then the voice changer voice will sound more realistic. The call quality of our calls through SpoofCard over the past few months has been great. We’ve tested other caller id spoofing services, namely (the old) Telespoof and SpoofTel, where the call quality wasn’t consistently as good as SpoofCard’s. We also found that SpoofCard turned out to be more reliable than the later with no downtime on their access numbers.

One of the best features, in our opinion, is the live customer service during normal business hours. Whenever we needed help we were able to press 0 at the main menu and were put through to a customer service rep at SpoofCards office. We’ve never seen this before with any other caller id spoofing providers. This could be a big help for business customers who may need instant assistance from time to time. SpoofCard also offers email support, with same day or next day turn around time, but we prefer the phone support.

SpoofCard also has a full featured web control panel where you can view your account details, add additional minutes to your PIN, view your call history, playback or download your recorded calls, and even transfer minutes between other Spoof Card PINs. Our favorite feature is the call history where SpoofCard shows you the number you called, the date/time of the call, the length of the call, your spoofed caller id, your voice changer selection, a link to the call recording, and the option to delete the record of the call, for maximum privacy. We found that SpoofCard’s web control panel has more built in options than any other spoofing provider. If you have a lot of calls you can even search through your logs for certain records. We were a little surprised that SpoofCard doesn’t offer a web interface allowing users to place calls from their site, which some other providers do offer, but when we asked them about the feature they said that they are working on it. So we may finally see this in the near future.

SpoofCard Pros: Easy to use, low purchase price, instant account setup, toll free number works from Canada, free call recording, voice changer, awesome web control panel, live telephone support!

SpoofCard Cons: Small “maintenance fee” every few weeks, voice changer could be better.

SpoofCard On Your iPhone

September 16th, 2007

Thanks for the folks at SpoofApp.com, SpoofCard can now be accessed right from your iPhone, allowing calls to be placed that take full advantage of SpoofCard’s free call recorder and voice changer. SpoofApp is NOT a native iPhone app and is distributed through Installer.app, so it requires you to have a “jailbroken” iPhone, meaning that you need to be brave enough to go against Apple’s recommendations and hack your iPhone to allow you to install 3rd party (unofficial) iPhone applications. If you already have a jailbroken iPhone with Installer.app you’ll know just how easy it is to install these apps. We really love these third party apps and until Apple releases their own iTunes app store this Summer, this is definitely the best and easiest way to get great 3rd party applications onto your iPhone.

SpoofApp is an easy to use application and is very straight-forward with its configuration, which is something that we appreciated. About the only thing required for SpoofApp to work is your SpoofCard PIN number. SpoofApp has very nice iPhone address book integration which makes it easy to select the numbers that you want to call if they’re already in your contact list. Most people these days don’t know the numbers of their friends, since they just put them in their contact list and never have to dial the number direct. So the address book integration is really the killer feature of the SpoofApp for us.

SpoofApp’s voice changer feature is easy to select and the call recording option for SpoofCard is selectable before placing each call. The only thing we don’t like is the “Area Code” setting, which we’re guessing, allows users to enter 7 digit numbers, instead of full 10 digit numbers, and then automatically have the area code added when placing the calls. SpoofCard requires 10 digit numbers, so whether you want to enter 7 digit, or 10 digit numbers into SpoofApp is up to you.

Overall, we think SpoofApp is a KILLER iPhone app and a great distribution model for SpoofCard!

Some first time users may be concerned about the legality of SpoofCard. At this time SpoofCard is 100% legal in the United States and Canada! There is currently legislation in the works in the United States to outlaw certain misuses of the technology. This includes calls with the intent to defraud, cause harm, or wrongfully obtain anything of value.

Why Use SpoofCard?

September 16th, 2007

SpoofCard was designed for those who care about their privacy when placing phone calls. With SpoofCard you’re provided with extra anonymity by being able to fake the caller id and display any number as the number your calling from. This also helps protect your number from showing up on the recipients phone bill because the faked caller id number is displayed instead. This means that when using SpoofCard there is no way for the person you called to call you back or know your real number if you don’t want them to.

SpoofCard is typically used by business professionals to display their office number as the calling number when calling from a cell phone outside of the office. This helps keep your cell phone number private and maintain a professional appearance. SpoofCard also features free call recording so you can record your sales calls or important legal calls for future references!

In the past a voice changer typically required a user to speak into a piece of hardware. With SpoofCard the voice changer is all software driven meaning there is no need for hardware anymore. When placing a call through SpoofCard, you’re given the option whether you’d like to change your voice to sound like a man or a woman. Your voice is then automatically changed in realtime as you speak during a conversation.

We don’t encourage users to make prank calls but SpoofCard is the ultimate tool for those prank phone calls to friends or family. You can use any number as the caller id, the voice changer and the free call recording features to really do the ultimate crank calls. Just use it responsibly!

Now you can try SpoofCard before you buy at http://www.spoofcard.com/freecall.php however the sample call does not include the voice changer or call recording features.
